Liberdade Neighbourhood Sao Paulo

Sunday, 30 June 2013 0 comments

Liberdade, which literally means ‘freedom’ in Portuguese, is Sao Paulo's Asian district.  Although the area contains various Asian businesses, its origin and primary cultural references are Japanese, which is why it's commonly referred to as the Japanese district.

Liberdade's central location is a major plus for visitors and the best way to get there is by the Sao Paulo Subway. There is a station on Liberdade Square, at the very center of the area's action. Liberdade Station is on the blue line, one stop away from Se, the main hub of São Paulo's subway system and the city's official center.

Besides its many Asian shops, Liberdade is home to The Historical Museum of Japanese Immigration in Brazil, which can be found on Rua Sao Joaquim, 381.

The first Japanese immigrants in Brazil arrived in 1908 to work on the coffee plantations of the Southeast, especially in Sao Paulo State. Gradually, groups of immigrants established themselves in the state capital, Sao Paulo, then undergoing a massive growth process that owed a lot to the booming coffee business.
By 1912, the area now known as Liberdade had become popular among Japanese immigrants looking for an affordable place to live.

In the 1940s, Liberdade was a thriving area with many businesses tending to the Japanese community, Japanese schools, baseball games on the weekends and newspapers published in Japanese. In 1941, the Brazilian government suspended the publication of all newspapers in Japanese. When President Getulio Vargas’s administration broke diplomatic relations with Japan in 1942, all the residents in the main Japanese enclave in the Liberdade area were expelled from their homes and could only return after World War II ended.

In the 1960’s and 70’s Liberdade underwent major changes. Chinese and Korean immigrants moved in, the Sao Paulo subway system was built and the area gained a station, Asian-style street lamps were put in place and, the district got its current name.

Most improvements to Liberdadewere initiated by Tsuyoshi Mizumoto, a Japanese businessman who wanted to honor his native land and show gratitude to his adopted country.

Liberdade Square and the neighboring streets host several celebrations. Among the most popular are the Chinese New Year and Sendai TanabataMatsuri, in July, which celebrates a love legend and during which people tie pieces of paper with their wishes to decorative bamboo.

Sao Paulo Airport Information

Sao Paulo is Brazil's largest city and a world financial powerhouse. It has two airports, the international airport, Guarulhos (GRU), and domestic only Congonhas (CGH) airport. Guarulhos airports are often very busy and can be a transportation nightmare at times.

Taxi Service

Sao Paulo International Airport, Guarulhos (GRU)

Although the official name is Guarulhos-Governador Andre Franco Montoro, it is more commonly referred to as Aeroporto Internacional Guarulhos de Sao Paulo. Guarulhos (pronounced gwa-RULE-yoos) sits 21 kilometres northeast of central Sao Paulo and a semi-direct public bus runs from the airport to the Tatuap subway station. The specialized Airport Bus Service connects Guarulhos airport with quite a few major hotels, the main bus terminal, and Sao Paulo's various business districts as well as Congonhas airport.

Taxi from Sao Paulo Airport

Taxi cabs area available from the airport and at pontos de taxi throughout the city. All cabs have meters and most now come with GPS monitors that the passenger can see from the backseat. Most drivers, however, speak very little English.  There is one exclusive provider of taxi services from the airport, which means they have the monopoly, but any cab company may drop passengers off at Guarulhos. Be aware that not all international credit cards will work at the Guarulhos taxi booth and therefore pre-booking a taxi is recommended. An excellent company offering taxis from Sao Paulo airport to city hotels is Sao Paulo Airport Transfers who provide an online booking service and free call number from the USA and United Kingdom.

When making your travel arrangements keep in mind that one of the world's busiest evening rush hours coincides with check-in times for night departures to North America and Europe and therefore the journey from the city to Guarulhos airport can take as long as 3 hours.

Sao Paulo Congonhas Airport

Sao Paulo's domestic-only airport is the Aeroporto de Sao Paulo, Congonhas and is 8 kilometres south of downtown Sao Paulo.  Congonhas airport is connected to the Sao Judas subway station via bus 675I-10. Taxis from Congonhas airport to Sao Paulo hotels and business districts cost anywhere from $25 to $50, depending on traffic.   As with Guarulhos airport, pre-booking with Sao Paulo Airport Transfers may be the easiest option and ensures a fixed rate, regardless of traffic.
